The Eight Annual Lois Jean Comer Memorial Back Road Challenge took place Saturday morning April 1, 2017 in Shenandoah. It was a beautiful morning for a race, not like previous years when it was freezing cold or threatened to rain. The race started at the intersection of 6th Street and Maryland Avenue and followed Lois Comers walking route from 6th Street left onto Shenvadel Avenue right onto 7th street and then a quick left onto Osceola Avenue. Then left on to 10th Street and right onto the Back Road where the race continued to a turnaround point on the Back Road and then returned back to the start/finish line.

This morning Mr. Stan Price was the time keeper for the runners. Mr Price was a teacher and coach at Page County High School and retired after 41 years at the school. (See Link below about Mr. Price’s Retirement)

The fastest male was Ryan Seal and Cerrianne Leatherland was the fastest female. Race results posted at the very bottom of this article, underneath the pictures.

Also in attendance for this run were representatives from Lord Fairfax Community College. Staff Sergeant Walton from the United States Army attended also and handed out bottles of water to the runners.

On September 13, 2009, Lois Jean Comer, lost a courageous battle with cancer. In her honor the Comer family started the annual Lois Jean Comer Back Road Challenge in 2010.

All proceeds from the race will go to the Lois Jean Comer Memorial Scholarship fund which has been established as an annual scholarship to be given to a deserving Page County High School senior to help further his or her education. To date this event has raised over $10,000 for this scholarship fund. All Photographs of this even were taken by Amos Thomas.
