Jean Lawson Stanley
Growing up in McGaheysville, Virginia, as a child I loved my paint-by-number kits and often copied my father when he was sketching for amusement. I was also fascinated with the fact
that my grandfather had painted as a young man. But life had other plans for me. I moved away and eventually graduated from Miami Dade College with an A.S. in Business; then earned
a B.S. in Political Science from Shepherd College, followed by a law degree from West Virginia University College of Law. Over the years, I have travelled to 18 different countries around the
world, living in Israel for 3 years where I was awarded the Meritorious Honor Award from the U.S. Department of State for my work at the American Embassy in Tel Aviv. I served with
the Shepherdstown Police Department and as Clerk of the Traffic Court while attending Shepherd College and continued to work in the field of law for several more years before
deciding to switch to the field of sales and marketing from which I have now retired. I am a member of the American Foreign Service Association and Pi Sigma Alpha and have now
lived in Shenandoah for almost twenty years. For fun, look for me in the movie, Evan Almighty, where I had a good time working as an extra.
As the mother of three daughters, I amused them by writing children's stories illustrated with my own drawings. My youngest said these were her inspiration for majoring in art during college. Now two of my daughters also paint and the other is busy using her art skills in her crafts. Although I have dabbled with sketching and painting over the years, it wasn't until I retired that I actually started to seriously begin to spend time on painting. Of course, I studied Art Appreciation and Art History in college but after retirement I began to study technique. When I'm not gardening. baking, sewing, refinishing furniture, or making repairs to my 128-year old house, you'll probably find me painting. It's my favorite hobby. J. Stanley.
